从一道高考题看fit, suit, match的区别

2008年天津卷高考英语有这样一道考题：
Her shoes ______ her dress; they look very well together.
A. suit B. fit C. compare D. match
此题答案选D，主要考查fit, suit, match的用法区别。
在fit, suit, match这三个词中，首先我们可以将其分为两组，一组是fit和suit，它们的意思是“合适”；另一组则是match，其意为“相配”。下面我们来看看它们的区别及用法特点。
一、fit与suit的用法区别
两者都可表示“适合”或“合适”，但fit主要是指尺寸、大小、形状等方面的适合。如：
Her coat fits perfectly. 她的大衣很合身。
The key doesn’t fit the lock. 这把钥匙打不开这把锁。
而suit 则主要指款式或花色等方面的适合。如：
Do you think that this style suits me? 你觉得这种款式适合我穿吗?
Red and black are colours that suit me very well. 红色和黑色都是适合我穿的颜色。
比较并体会下面两个句子：
This dress doesn’t fit me. Have you got a larger size? 这件连衣裙不合我的身，你有大一点尺寸的吗?
This dress doesn’t suit me. Have you got another style? 这件连衣裙不适合我穿，你还有其他的式样吗?
另外，suit还可以用来谈论某种安排和情况是否方便。如：
Tuesday would suit me very well for a meeting. 星期二开会对我来说很合适。
Will it suit you, if I come around three? 我3点钟左右来，你觉得合适吗？
二、match的用法特点
match主要表示“与……相配或相称”。如：
Her clothes do not match her age. 她的衣服与她的年龄不配。
The color of the shirt does not match that of the tie. 衬衫的颜色与领带不相配。
另外，它还可以表示“使……相配”“使……相称”。如：
I’m trying to match this yellow wool; do you have anything like it? 我正在找能配上这黄毛线的线，你有差不多的吗？
match有时还可用作不及物动词，表示“相配”“相称”。如：
The curtains and paint don’t match. 窗帘和油漆颜色不协调。
These shoes do not match; one is large and the other is small. 这双鞋不相配，一只大，一只小。
以下几个搭配也值得特别注意：
1. match…to… 使……与……相匹配：
Something went wrong in matching supply to demand. 供需平衡出了问题。
2. match up to 比得上：
The hotel didn’t match up to the description on the website. 这家旅馆远不像网上描述的那么好。
3.match with 与……相配：
I want a tie that will match with this suit. 我想买条领带来配我这套衣服。
These ribbons do not match with your hat. 这些丝带与你的帽子不相配。
4. match…with…
使…与…相匹配：
He never matches his words with his deeds. 他从来是言行不一。
使…与…较量：
I’ll match my strength with yours. 我要与你比比力气。
使…与…结婚：
I’m trying to match him with the nurse. 我正介绍他与这位护士结婚。
